I have been riding for the last 19 years. I started riding on a 1978 Honda CB750K.From there, I graduated to a 1983 Honda Shadow 750. I found a 1972 FLH w/sidecar that only had 9,000 mi. that I picked up for a steal in 1985. In 1988, I purchased my 1988 FLHTC. The difference in the way that motorcycle performed from the 1972 was like night and day. Since then, I have ridden approx. 88,000 miles on that bike. I had the top end rebuilt (it probably didn't need it, but since I was replacing some seals and had it apart...). The only other major maintenance was the replacement of the clutch at 76,000 mi. I also replaced the stock seat with a Mustang seat at 80,000. The stock seat had just become too "broken in" at that point. I run Spectro Golden in the crank case and change the oil every 5,000. I have often been tempted to buy a new machine, but have found no compelling reason to do so. I think that if HD ever decides to put a frame mounted counter-balanced engine in the touring models, I would buy a new one. For now, I subscribe to the philosophy that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
