'I purchasd my 1999 Red Drifter 800 in April 1999 and have about 18,000km on it. (12,000 miles)I purchased it for the vintage look, the Indian look, and the low cost. The 1500 would have been nice, but I could not justify the extra cost. Every winter I do a few more modifications. I have vacuum plated: head light bucket, front & rear turn signals, rear tail light housing, speedo panel, and the side covers.I have added a windshield, saddle bags, hi way bars, wide white wall tires, and mud flaps. I have kept the two-up seat because of the saddlebag rack. I enjoy the ride, but it could have a few more ponies, and the seat about 2 inches further back. I constantly get good comments on the style. Occasionallly someone mistakes it for a new Indian. I only inform them if they ask. I hade one fellow say to me: "so, whats the price difference between this and a Harley?" I replied, "about $20,000" (cdn $$) I have a wife, kids, mortgage, etc. Can't justify the $$ diference, can you?

I rode a 2000 model 800 Drifter at Vintage Days East here at Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course. My 15 year old daughter rode pillion. We thoroughly enjoyed the look and feel of the Drifter! But the lack of cornering clearance and relatively low power would make it hard for me to own only an 800 Drifter. The engine was smooth while still having a definite V-twin beat. We rode a H-D Road King earlier with the new 88 engine. Yes it made more power and was more comfortable...but not 2 1/2 times more! The 800 Drifter is a definite bargain as an only bike for a solo rider or as a second bike.

Sold an H-D Superglide for this bike and couldn't be happier. This bike is a solid performer. I put 195 miles on it the first day and 45 days later with 2,400 miles- no complaints here. The Drifter combines an old Indian look with a totally modern and reliable ride, and it certainly is an attention getter. My wife is thrilled with the wide, comfortable passenger seat and now wants to ride with me whenever I go out (gee, thanks Kawasaki). On the downside is the exhaust note and lack of saddlebag accommodation, but with a little American ingenuity these 'problems' can be solved. With liquid and air-cooling, four valves per cylinder, single overhead cam, digital ignition and power to spare, the Drifter is an excellent value.
