The GS500 was my first decent bike, having previously owned a 1974 Honda junkyard special. The GS 500 is a great beginner's bike - so much so that it's almost cliche to say it. Its best attribute is its handling. The light weight (360 pounds dry) makes for a bike that eats up the curves. The only letdown in this area is a very soft front fork; it always nosedives when you brake and compromises otherwise impeccable handling. Fortunately, this can be easily fixed, and there are many websites that explain how to do it. It's also decent looking and gets excellent gas mileage. The weak point is the lack of torque. Although not a powerful motor, it does rev nicely up to the redline, and past 8,000 RPM feels quick. It has no low-end, however, and most non-cruisers will blow it away. You will quickly be day-dreaming of a more powerful bike. Once again, numerous websites explain how to hop-up the engine (which is simple and easy to work on). With the proper modifications, a GS500 can be rather fast. Overall, it's a great value and loads of fun. It handles better than all but track-focused sportsbikes. I recommend it to both beginners, those seeking cheap thrills, and people who want to do some performance work without needing an engineering degree.

Bought it new in March of 2003. First motorcycle. Bike is very user friendly and forgiving. haven't done any service yet, but it doesn't seem like it will be hard. Insurance is very cheap, just stay away from Progressive. They put all the GS into one category, which puts this little commuter in the same insurance class as gixxers. A gixxer it is not. It does have excellent pickup, is lightweight, and is very well balanced. I'm still in the <5000 rpm break-in period, so my speed is effectively limited to 60 mph. I rode it about 35 miles to school today. My only comfort complaint is that certain parts of my body near the fuel tank got a little pinched, and my long legs (I'm 6'1") got a little cramped. Riding position is quite upright and non-aggressive. The lack of a windshield is kind of a pain, but it can be fixed with either an expensive Suzuki windshield, a very expensive Suzuki sport fairing, or a not-so-expensive aftermarket windshield or fairing. The adjustable rear preload is handy, although I haven't had the need to adjust it. Actually, I don't know what setting I need. Somebody is lying about something, though. The specs say it has a 4.5 gallon fuel tank with a (I think) .5 gallon reserve. I had to put it on reserve today, meaning I had used 4 gallons of fuel, right? WRONG! 2.7 gallons filled it up. Maybe the reserve is 1.8 gallons.... Maybe the overall tank capacity is 3.2 gallons... I got about 42 mpg today, having lost a little when it fell over, so I'm not going to complain too much. Maybe someday I'll drain it completely and fill it up all the way and find out how much it really holds... To finally shut up, if you're looking into buying a first bike, or a cheap commuter, look for one of these.
