Sure I will upgrade someday to a Gixxer, but for a guy with only 1400 miles of motorcycle experience this is the bike for me. It is a little heavy, weighing a full 100 lbs heavier than the 2001 GSXR 600 at 458 lbs so be aware. Other than that I love my Katana. Enjoy the ride.

When I rode my 2000 600 Katana out of the shop in August it was the first time I had ever ridden a motorcycle. As such I would recommend this to ANY first time rider. Sure if you're used to riding a Hayabusa the Katana may seem like it lacks power, but I weigh 300lbs and I have not had any problem keeping up with other bikes in the real world. Besides that, the riding position is very comfortable. I can ride all day and neither my knees nor my back ache from being in an extremely aggressive riding position as other sportbikes have. Bottom line, it's fast enough to get you into a lot of trouble quickly, and it handles great.

This being my first bike ever I was totally intimidated by it (they delivered it for me 'cause I was too scared to ride it) now I feel like the master Katana rider. Be careful though, it can bite back if you don't pay attention. I rode a friend's Kawa '600 and it has more kick but we know the Katana is a Sport-"cruiser" not just a sporter, besides is far more comfortable, less expensive, bigger tank, and awesome looking. Although I will move up to the 1,000 range as soon as possible, my Katana is the best bike for your money and although slower than sport 600's it is by no means a slow machine. Great bike!

Now, after riding it everywhere and getting to know the bike, I must say that it is surprisingly fast and very dependable. It's funny; all I heard before I got this bike is how the "Canatuna" is a crappy bike for wimps. And to tell the truth, it might be compared to the other race oriented sportbikes out there.... But I've never ridden those. I guess I'm naive, but I'm extremely happy with my bike. Just like what was said in another review... don't laugh, because one day we will be riding that R1 that brushes by you.

I have to say I chose this bike for its looks. I have had many compliments on it, but they don't ride it. When I checked out the rear sprocket alignment it was a good half of an inch out. I set it back and then my vibration moved to the right peg. I guess it's a small price, but the guy that said he rode his 400 miles, definitely has a different bike than mine. Overall it was what I wanted something that looked good, but didn't break loose when coming out of a corner. I have rode over 20 k miles, so this isn't just a dream. But my butt could use less vibration!!!

I bought my 2000 Katana in August after a month of researching and negotiating. The only experience I've had with motorcycles is an 80cc trail bike when I was a kid, and several dealerships said that the Katana was a manageable package that was good for a beginner. I've been nothing but happy with the acceleration and handling, as well as the easy start-up and reliability thus far. A final note for the hardcore sport riders that scoff at the weight of the bike and "lack" of power---just remember that a Katana owner may be new to the sport, training and saving, to upgrade to a full-on race ready machine to whoop your butt. Take it as it is, ladies and gentleman. A well-rounded sport-touring bike with bulletproof reliability.

The power is not outstanding but fast enough to have a lot of fun in the twisties and on backroads (110 mph @ 8500 rpm, redline is 11,000). Takes all but 20 minutes to change the oil. I love this bike.
