2002 MV Agusta Motorcycle reviews

Previously owning a Yamaha R6, I admittedly bought the MV Agusta because of the "cool" factor. Afterall only 300 2002 Silver MV Agusta F4 1+1s where imported into the US...this bike is unique! Also a big consideration for me was how darn beautiful it is too. Let's face it Ducati was king until their chief designer left to come over to MV Agusta to design the F4. Some of the incredible design features include the unique "pipe organ" exhaust design, only one control arm on the rear wheel while Ducati has moved to two, the low profile sweeping faring, and all the custom CBS parts. So while my purchase decision was based on the uniqueness and beauty of the MV Agusta, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this bike handles. After riding MV Agust for a month, then had to drive my old Yamaha R6 to the store to sell. The R6 felt like a scooter compared to the MV Agusta. The MV Agusta leans into the turns smoothly with equal pressure on the handle bars. Because of the seat, foot peg, handlebar placement the rider is in the perfect position for aggressive handling. And this thing is fast with a nice little growl to boot. My only knock on the bike is it can get uncomfortable to ride after about an hour on the bike. The far lean forward puts a lot of pressure your hands which catch up with you after a while. While I thought the seat was uncomfortable when I orginally purchased the bike, it turned out to feel completely comfortable after I got used to it. You probably know its a great looking bike, but lots of people overlook the functional aspects of the Agusta. POWER It's a narrow engine with a short stroke, so if you're coming from a V-twin, it will be different. The MV lives for the upper rpms. Keep the rev's up and the MV will deliver. My first MV (which was totaled by an SUV)was a 2000 model with 124 crank hp. At full power, it was nice. Not great but nice. After the accident, I got a 2002 all silver with 137hp and yes, the power difference is noticeable. It doesn't have the broad torque curve a liter class bike has, so it's best to keep it in the 9,000 to 13,000 range, if you want the power. Power delivery feels like a supercharge or turbo-charge 6 cylinder sports car, while a liter class bike feels like a V8 or V10 cyclinder sports car. HANDLING. Handling. It's lighter than a Ducati 996 but has the feel and confidence of the Ducati. It's heavier than a 2002 R1 but is no where near as twitchy. In fast corners, the MV really excels. In slow corners, it can needs a bit of muscle to push around. The MV's steering is really relative to what you're used to riding. DRIVABLITY In December 2002, I got an R1 to use for commuting. The MV is the perfect bike for track days and canyons but a bit out of place commuting in traffic. However, I find myself still using the MV for commuting and canyon riding and leave the R1 for just commuting. The MV is a joy to own and a pleasure to ride. You just have to accept it for want it is: A narrow focus, short stroke 4 cyclinder that needs to be rev'ed and inspires tons of confidence in the corners. This is the least powerful, most expensive bike I ever bought... ...and the ownership experience is simply better than the rest hands down. Everything about this bike is great. The quality, the styling, the finish, the details, the sound, the feedback, and the handling. Comfort: I am 6' 2" and don't have any issues with comfort Reliability: after 6000 miles it's been more reliable than any Ducati I have ever had. Attention: Expect admiration from all directions, including car drivers that confess they'd never normally give a bike a second look. Every gas station visit draws an audience. 33% of your fellow bikers will make a point of saying hello, while 66% will be so green they can't even look at you; it's actually quite shocking. As Cagiva continues to demonstrate, you can't make bikes this good for those kind of prices and stay in business; get one while you can. Show less

What a bike! This bike is what all other manufactors should emulate. The quality and style. You could buy a GSXR750 and save some dough, but the point is that when you put it all together in a package does it whew your heart. The quality parts and craftmanship is what this bike does best. It was tough to spend $19000 on a 750 until you see it. The four pipes under the seat the instrument cluster is all beautifully design. I almost did buy a 998 duc, but the side by side the MV won out. Then I understand why. As for handling it is flawless. As for power...not as much as a GSXR750 but more than adequate for the most die-hard riders. It is the looks you get from people. They all gravitate to the MV no matter how many bikes are out there. Call me foolish, but this type of bike only comes out once or twice in a lifetime. Show less
