I also had to purchase a 'gel' seat to make the long trips easier on me. But I couldn't be happier with it. One bad item is the battery being at the bottom of bike and I do mean bottom. Also it is a good thing I know how to listen to an engine since it has no tachometer, bad for first time buyers. I also do not like the spoke wheels, but I needed a scoot for vacation and had to accept the good (price) with the bad (spokes).

I did a lot of research on my first bike and bought the Intruder. This is a great bike. Lots of power, a lot more than my brother's Sportster. Really comfortable once I installed the highway pegs. Me on the other hand hate the poor single disc front brake not to mention the noise it makes, cold starts always require a longer warm up than any other bikes we've owned .On longer road trips with a group, she's always the first to need gas due to the small fuel tank but on a good note its easy to handle ,looks good and comes with a great price tag of $4700 u.s or $7400.00 canadian dollars.Last thing for this review i just can't get over is .......after riding for over 16 years is I have never got as may "nice bike" comments while riding her intruder 800 over any of my past bikes which are mainly sport bikes

I started motorcycling in spring of this year, and began with a Suzuki Savage. There were many things I liked about the Savage, and also a few things I didn't. After 4,500 miles on the Savage, I was ready for something bigger - I wanted a V-twin, and something with more performance than a typical cruiser. After purchasing a 2002 Intruder 800, I've now got just what I had hoped for! The Intruder has all of the following advantages over the Savage: * Smooth, torquey and quick-revving V-twin. * Fantastic, deep, powerful exhaust sound through tapered dual exhausts, versus the mild, understated sound of the Savage's single exhaust. * The extra weight gives the Intruder much more stability, without being really any harder to navigate in and out of the garage. * Unlike many reviews I read, the handling and ease of turning on the Intruder is actually much better than the Savage. The wider shape of the handlebars and the reduced rake on the front wheel seem to make slow speed cornering easier on the Intruder. * The Intruder's ride is smooth as silk without being mushy. I found the Savage's rider to be overly firm. * The Intruder is smoother shifting with a perfection transition in gear ratios. * The hydraulic clutch on the Intruder is a delight and far superior to the conventional clutch on the Savage. * The Intruder's drive shaft is a dream compared to the squeeky belt drive on the Savage. * The Intruder's seat is wide, flat, and much more comfortable. I may not have to upgrade it. * The Intruder's footpeg's are higher and more comfortably placed - no more nicking the footpegs on steep turns. * On longer rides with minimal starts and stops, the Intruder's mileage meets or exceed's the Savage's. * Nearly every detail on the Intruder is just better and of higher quality. * Both bikes have Suzuki's marginal, squeeky front brake. * The Savage starts must easier, usually without even needing the choke or a warm-up period. The Intruder runs colder and almost always needs the choke and a long warm-up period. It's not my intent to trash the Savage because I did enjoy its unique charm. I'm just trying to convince Savage owners to strongly consider the Intruder 800 over other bikes when, and if, they choose to get a bigger bike. The Intruder is one hot bike, with fantastic looks, a comfortable riding position like a standard, and all the style and grace of a cruiser. I'm now out of the market for a different bike for many years to come!

I have been borrowing a 1998 Intruder (same as a 2002) for about a month now while my Goldwing was in the shop. I commute every day about 25 miles in city traffic and on the freeway. It is the best lane spliting cruiser I have ridden. (yes I have experience on bikes smaller than a Wing) I get about 37mpg city and about 47mpg highway. I find it a little cramped (6'0" 240lbs) but power is good at any speed under 80mph. Braking is excellent. I have put about 2000 miles on the bike, including one 250 mile day. It handles really well. I like it much better than I thought I would. Because of the cramped position I would not buy one for myself, however I would recommend it to anyone who is shorter than I. I am now thinking about a volusia because it has the same engine with more leg room. I do not think it will handle as well though.
