2004 Suzuki Intruder Volusia 800 (VL800)

5.0
I bought this bike expecting a nice comfortable cruiser. What I got was so much more. With the astounding low-end torque and the low riding seat, I instantly fell in love. My last bike was a Yamaha 1100 maxima. It was fun, but this v-twin gives me much more of what I want. It's more stable at...

My last bike was a Yamaha 1100 maxima. It was fun, but this v-twin gives me much more of what I want. It's more stable at all speeds, smooth and throaty off the lot, hands down the best bike for the money.

2004 Suzuki SV650

This bike is light and handles extremely well. This is my first street bike and I really enjoy riding it. The engine weight is centered low in the frame, which helps to make it feel much lighter. The engine has some lag at low RPMs, but once it's rolling, it has plenty of torque. The seat is...

The engine has some lag at low RPMs, but once it's rolling, it has plenty of torque. The seat is great for one up riding. The handlebars could be a little lower. Mirrors work fine. I've experienced no problems and it gets excellent mileage. This is a great bike for anyone. Once you've ridden an SV, it's easy to see why they are so popular!

I purchased my '04 DL 650 in March of 2004. I rode it home while there was still snow on the ground. I have been riding motorcycles on and off since I got my first street bike in 1978. I have never bought a new motorcycle and purchased the v-strom because I liked the all around nature of the bike and had heard many good things about the SV 650 engine. In two seasons of riding in northern Wisconsin (season runs from early April to the beginning of November) I have put on 18000 trouble free miles. I really do like this bike a lot. It is the type of bike that just begs to be ridden; it is comfortable and with the large gas tank, you do not need to stop often for fuel. I have been averaging around 50 mpg. I took my first long motorcycle ride this past summer, 2200 miles in 5 days. I rode with a group of mostly cruiser type motorcycles, including a VTX1800. This bike shocked the guys I was riding with; they were surprised that the smallest displacement bike in the group was far from being the slowest bike. And when it came to the twisty roads, they where left in the dust. I added the factory Suzuki hard luggage to the bike, and other than the width of the bags, I really like them. They stay dry in the rain, and have a lot of room for everything I need. About the only issue I have with the bike is buffeting from the windshield at freeway speeds. This issue was mostly cured by the addition of a "Laminar Lip" installed on the stock windshield. Other additions to the bike have been a throttle lock and a seat pad from Aerostich. Future plans call for heated grips to deal with the chilly Wisconsin morning commutes. My only other complaint about the bike is that the engine makes a lot of mechanical noises, mostly clutch related. I have heard a couple others and they seem to sound the same, so I don't see this as a problem. I see this as one of the great bikes and if it was not for the funky look of the bike, I think there would be a lot more of them around. It does everything well, and is a lot of fun on the twisty roads.

I was told when looking for the best dual sport on the market by Honda and Yamaha dealers that the 04 Suzuki DRZ 400s is 80/20 dirt /street and therefore the best one out for there for a majority dirt rider who occasionally needed to run on the street to buy a forgotten item while camping. I have since ridden over 2500 miles of desert, mountain and forest and it's been great. I of course have spent for stronger springs, jetting, pipe, gearing, and a new UFO rear fender assembly, engine case covers, and skid plate and to those of you thinking of buying this bike just be aware she's heavy stock (280lbs) and takes a little upper body build if you like to ride above tooling around on access roads. She really gets up and charges like a 400 should. Only one thing I can say I think the Suzuki Corp. dropped the ball on. It doesn't have a kick-start, that's right, electric only. Now I know you're thinking, "So, what's the big deal?" Well let one of those 150lb engineers try bump starting this puppy in the flats of the Mojave desert when the battery or starter decides it's time for a "Murphy Law" after a rest stop! Still, I'm a happy camper.

My bike is the greatest bike in the world. It can keep up with the xr100. It beats the heck out of the xr70 and the tt-r90. When I am out riding, I hit jumps and get about three to five feet of air. My friend Willy takes his xr100 over jumps and only gets not even a foot high but we are still...

My friend Willy takes his xr100 over jumps and only gets not even a foot high but we are still only in grade 5 so we are not pros but we are still great riders. I don't know if I can keep up with the kx65. I love my jr80 it is the king of all kids bikes.

In fact, I sold my 2004 Honda ST1300 after I bought the bike. It is light and extremely maneuverable. Not fast but very quick and balanced. Cruises on a long weekend tour at 80mph all day long yet carves winding roads well. I ride at high speeds, so 40mpg is about all I get. But you pay for your thrills. I really think that this is one bike everyone should consider. I also have an 1800 Gold Wing for when my wife goes along. But the Wee Strom is way more fun.

But it turned out to be the best bike for me. I did research on it for two months before I decided to buy it. All the reviews I read said it was a great starter bike. I'll never regret having it.

It looks like a fat boy with 1/5th of the price. It's a great bike for the money but if you're doing some serious traveling (400-500 miles a day), you might want a bigger motor because the 800 cc doesn't cut it for 75-80 mph on Nebraska freeway, it gets really riled up. It just needs about 1200 cc if you're going to travel with it but it's great for around town.
