I bought a 2001 H-D FXD in July, 2005 with 14,000 mi. Finally, after owning Suzuki and Yamaha, my first Harley! I knew for a long time I always wanted a Big Twin, but I didn't truly understand why until I finally owned one. The feel, sound and power are euphoric. It gets people's attention everywhere I ride. The bike is reliable and comfortable: commuting to work, cruising swiftly on the Interstate at high speed with ease or twisting through The Dragon. I've got over 26,000 miles on it now and it just wants to keep going! Thanks to H-D for making such a great ride.

Compared to the Metrics, a bit more maintenance required, 3 places hold oil instead of 1, Hex screws instead of bolts, but if you thought purchasing a V-Twin metric would be like riding a Herley... you're WRONG. I now know what it means when they say Welcome to the club.

At 6'5" and 285 lbs, this bike cramps me. Not enough legroom and the handlebars almost hit my knees. At 6'5" and 285 lbs, this bike cramps me. Not enough legroom and the handlebars almost hit my knees. The rear seat is impended upon by the Tour Pak, which doesn't go back far enough to provide adequate comfort for the passenger. (And my wife is 5'4", 145 lbs. I have a Heritage Softail Classic now, which has far more room for both the rider and passenger. The Ultra has a great sounding stereo, and plenty of luggage capacity, but makes due with a skinny 130 series rear tire (for handling). The Ultra is too bulky for comfortable around town riding, you'll wished you had a lighter bike, like a Softail Standard. The Ultra is what it is, a good highway bike that is in need of forward controls in a bad way, and more room, not for gear, but for people. As for power, the power it has is adequate, much better than the pathetic Evo that preceded it. Still, if you buy one, at least put the Stage 1 Kit in it, with SE pipes for better sound. Skip the extended warranty, these bikes are usually very reliable. One more thing, my size 13's kept hitting the sides of the fairing lowers; this bike obviously is designed for someone smaller than myself.

In standard form, performance is not that great. With the following mods it is quick: 1 size bigger low speed jet, 1 size bigger main jet, Ness air cleaner, free flowing slip-on mufflers. Suspension could be better (firmer) for improved ride but otherwise it is a ripper.

I purchased my FXD back in April 2001. It is the first streetbike that I've owned, and currently has over 7,000 miles. My riding started when I was 10 years old, and I have ridden minibikes, dirtbikes, quads, ...etc. I'm 33 years old and had always wanted a Harley. But, I did dissect the entire line of motorcycles from all manufacturers, before buying. I based my rating on looks, reliability, performance, and value. It got four stars because it's not perfect. The looks are undeniably original and everything I thought a cruiser should look like. The reliability has been up to par. Have only had routine service performed. As it should be with only 7,000 miles. The bike performs well by cruiser standards. The brakes are good but not great. It handles curves surprisingly well. I underanticipated a curve with a passenger aboard and had to really lean the bike hard in order to avoid oncoming traffic. The speed was 45mph and I was waiting to hear the pegs scratch. They never did and the bike made the turn with ease. It truly is a solid performer and will do whatever asked as long as its within reason. Acceleration is good and torque more than adequate. The value is where my concerns are, and let me explain. The price out the door was more than retail, add the price of the exhaust/intake/jet mod that all Harley's need, and the uncontrollable urge to accessorize (forward controls, risers, chrome, windshield, etc.). While the bike does hold it's value, you really do fork over a lot of money to get it just the way you want. Harley has mastered the technique of not making one machine truly fits any one person comfortably, and then providing the accessories to do so. If you have the cash to plunk down and keep plunking, by all means, do so. If you only have enough for the bike and not the required goodies to make it "FIT", than go elswhere.

I upgraded from a Sporster because I wanted to keep my teeth fillings intact, and wasn't disappointed. I chose the T-Sport because it best met my needs for a reliable commuter, sporty enough to be fun on twisty roads, and comfortable enough for long mountainous day rides or overnighters. If you can only keep one bike, and want a Harley, this is it! After 20 months and 21K troublefree miles, (only addition was a new seat) I'd acquired a used Road Glide and a Honda VFR. My wife no longer wanted to ride on the Dyna. I found myself using the other bikes except for commuting, and there are better (i.e. cheaper)commuters out there. But it was fun while it lasted, and held its resale value pretty well too.

Last bike was a 1500 Vulcan preceeded by 1100 and 1200 Goldwings so I feel qualified to give a honest assessment of the machine. Power is adequate but could use more riding two up. Handling is better than expected, much quicker than the wings. Shorter wheel base and steeper rake. Not as much room for rider and passenger as expected. Currently have a backrest installed to support lower back. Have not taken a long trip yet so I cannot assertain the long run comfort. Will probably need to add a gel pad to the seat. Overall very happy with purchase. I'll give her 4 stars because nothing is perfect.
