Suzuki Intruder 800 (VS800GL) reviews

I road all over with this motorcycle, Vermont, Virginia, Lake George, Pennsylvania and more. This is a great bike for POWER, HANDLING, MILEAGE, COMFORT and DEPENDABILITY. It now turns 35 yrs. Old and still dependable. Not a drip of oil has ever been found on the garage floor T.G. At 62,342 miles had to replace the drive shaft other than that, clutch, brake pads, oil changes, tires and had seats refurbished exactly like when I bought it back in 1990. I owned a 2001 Suzuki Volusia 800 for less than a year. It was reliable, looked great, and was comfortable, but it is NOT a freeway friendly bike. Acceleration was acceptable up to 55-60 mph, but it strained to go much faster. Top speed was 75-80 mph riding downhill with a strong breeze blowing behind me! The shaft drive on the bike is very smooth but the gearing is absolutely horrible. The only way to remedy this is to find a donor VL1500 and swap out the drivetrain. This is an expensive solution to a problem that shouldn’t have existed in the first place. Overall, the only people that I’d recommend this to are ones that want a highway cruiser. Around town or on 55mph highways, the bike is great - I have no complaints. For any significant jaunts that include freeway riding above 55-60 mph, I strongly advise against the 800 and would look for a 1500 instead. Show less

Well at 74 years of age, I found it difficult to manage my Kawasaki Concours (2003) it just wore me out. So got a cruiser Intruder 800 (Year2000) with 10,000 miles on it runs great, the only complain is the lack of distance one can travel, with only a 3.43 gallons capacity (versus 6.2 on the concours) and no gas gauge, cruising without a care for gas is not possible. Overall nice cruiser, need to get highway pegs for it. Show less

Bought it new in 2002. It came with a lifetime warranty brochure! I said what vehicle comes with that? Been in the shop 1 time knock wood. Not counting tires. It's been awesome. I love my 02 vs800 suzuki intruder. Get one! Show less

I have a 2000 Suzuki marauder vz800 I have owned this bike for over 15 years I have done everything to this bike besides pull the motor the trick to this bike is u need to find someone who can dial the carbs in u got to no what u are doing or the bike will never run right 2 years ago me and 2 of my Harley Davidson friends Road from Pittsburgh to the key west Florida hit the smokey mountains dragon tail bike ran like a dream I bought the bike with 5 thousand miles and it just turned 34 thousand miles I put a custom paint job on it changed the handle bar and I turned it into a 1 seater forward controls I run cobra drag pipes no baffles Harley riders don't want to ride beside me the bikes so loud wish there was a way to post pictures I would of my 2000 Suzuki marauder vz800 Show less

I bought the bike used about 18000 on it. About Three years ago. Great bike to learn on. Little to no maintenance required. Only issues I've had is with the clutch lever. But for a 26 Year old bike she screams Show less

The Suzuki 800 is a fun and dependable bike however the older bikes can no longer be repaired at the dealerships because Suzuki as well as Yamaha no longer make parts and dealerships won't install non-OEM parts. For example side panels, fenders and gas tanks are very difficult to find after market and OEMs are no longer made for many older models. After market extra capacity gas tanks are still available. Check your local dealer to insure they still service the year model you wish to purchase. Or learn to DIY. Honda seems to be the best for older serviced models but even for the honda rebel honda no longer make gas tanks, side panels and fenders for the cruiser series. I owned some cruisers; Yamaha Dragstar 650, Virago 1100, HD FXDWG and Intruder 1400. I still have my 99 Intruder 1400. Best bike I ever had. Fast, fun, reliable and best looking bike I ever seen. If I park it, usually people go over to it to check it out or takes photos of it. It weigs 260 kg, but it feels lighter. It handles corners like a racing bike. I will never sell it Show less

I've had this bike for a few years now was down one cylinder due to carbs needing rebuilt, did everything to it that a 20 year old bike needs, went over everything, rebuilt many things clutch, etc..I rode a xt600 dual sport since i was a teenager and wanted to check out a cruiser and the price was right so i trailered it home. Still have more in parts in this bike than it will ever be worth but that's usually how it goes. Overall it's been a good bike tons of power for a stock 800, this thing will out accelerate a lot of other vehicles and it's really quick but it is geared low so anything over 65 is a little uncomfortable as it's not a highway bike. At first the cruiser handling was a little foreign to me and left me thinking that maybe i had a sticky steering head bearing but it's just how it is with the angle of rake it has on the forks you have to really power through corners to keep it stable. Overall I learned to like this bike and it's made a great addition to the stable and I plan on keeping it around, probably wouldn't part with it for under 2 grand even then i would be a bit torn. Only a few things i dont like about it, it's geared low so it doesn't like highway speeds, it's a little viby, but i think thats just a common thing with the v twin engines in general, the power off idle is a little twitchy,thought it was a carb sync issue but it seems it's just how it is, and I dont like the buckhorn handlebars, just a weird hand angle that gets uncomfortable after a while. Waiting for a set of drag bars and risers to show up on ebay off a later bike for cheap to fix the bar issue. So if you see one of these older intruders with decent miles on it for cheap grab it up because it's worth it, just know that it's a 20 year old bike and it will need work, and if you aren't doing the work yourself then it's not going to be worth "taking it to the shop" when you get the bill, grab a shop manual and get it done.
