Also part of the frame is a hollow cavity that is literally passage from the air filter (which is stupidly positioned underneath the seat) to the intake. And I’ve encountered oil clogging which enturn caused the engine to sieze.

I first started riding my fathers 2005 xr400r religiously when i was just a young whippersnapper (about 11 or 12 years of age) . I was a bit scared when i first learned to kick start it not being able to touch the ground. Coming off an xr100, the large increase in wheel size, engine size, compression, torque, horsepower, gearing, top speed, suspension travel, seat height and mad-dogness made this bike extremely exciting and scary. I only weighed about 40kg at the time and got the Xr up to eye watering speeds maxing out the 160 km/h speedo on long straight dirt roads. the XR's ability to cruise over rough terrain more efficiently then smaller kids bikes was addicting. In terms of reliability I have taken her from about 8,000 kms to over 14,000 and never once given up on kick starting the cantankerous bitch after a multi month sit in the shed. This is possibly the most reliable bike I have ever swung a leg over. Unreal simplicity and it just works. In terms of performance this bike will knock the socks off most other new or old trail bikes (they don't make em like they used too) I learned to wheelie on this torque machine, she is a low speed wheelie machine and will happily come up in first second and third, even fourth if you throw your weight around and encourage her to give you a thrill. This bike had been rejetted and was very thirsty for fuel and is probably in need of a long range tank as it only has about 60-160 km range. for comfort, the suspension does the job perfectly and the seat will give you a sore arse after about 20 mins of cruising if you dont stand . I think this has something to do with my big ass dad wearing the padding out of the seat however. I conclusion my experiences with the xr400 has been great as i knocked the socks off my mates shitbox bikes, I currently ride a ktm 350 exc-f and it is a great bike but you would be surprised how the Xr still compares to it in terms of performance and definitely requires less maintenance. She has only had a few oil changes and still goes well.

I just got an 04 xr250r and I love this bike. I live in the foothills of Cody,WY. We have a lot of terrain right outside our back door. I’ve always wanted a dirt bike since I was a kid. At 45 I now have one and I’m loving it. My son is on a CR80r, which just flies. I’m learning, reading, and watching content like crazy. For a guy my age, beat up contractor, it’s been a great bike so far. There are time I have to stand, but for the most part I’m centered on the sandal, feet on pegs on the balls of my foot. The bike was temperamental to start initially, but I was dumb. I read up on the decomp, as well as too dead center, jetted the carb, and did a round of overall maintenance…now it’s a hard kick and I’m gone. I’d say if you’re a dude my age and you find one of these bikes, buy it. I might be a lame, but I’m working on it and having a great time. What else matters?

They're often dismissed as 'beginners bikes,' and they do serve well in that function - but it's also one of the last small, basic Honda motorbikes that you can find - simple, low maintenance drum brakes, super easy oil change, cheap tires - everything about them is basic and fun.
We've done a few tours through the western mountains and deserts, and this little bike has never let me down. It did blow an oil seal once (common with Rebels, which share the motor), but this was fairly easy to repair and has given me no trouble since.
These make great city or suburban bikes as well as lightweight touring machines. I replaced the front sprocket with a 15 tooth to give a little better freeway performance, but otherwise it has remained stock (with an aftermarket rear luggage rack). Parts are dirt cheap (should you require them) and maintenance is bone simple.
A cool little Honda like they used to make them - zippy, fun, simple and economical.
